Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Balla described Manipur police as the guardians of peace and harmony in the state as state police commemorated its 134th raising day on Sunday.

Balla also lauded their tireless efforts in maintaining law and order, tackling organized crime and drug trafficking, and ensuring the safety of citizens even in the most challenging circumstances.
The Manipur police completed its 134th year of existence since its establishment in 1892 as State Military Police (SMP) that was formed following the defeat of Manipur’s King by the British in Khongjom War (April 1892).
The nascent SMP began with a section strength of one European officer, 14 local officers, 49 NCOS and 400 sepoys.
The event was marked by a proud celebration of valour, discipline, and the enduring motto of the Manipur Police -“Service Before Self.”
Attending the commemoration function held at the parade ground of 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground, Imphal, the Governor commended the courage, professionalism, and selfless service of the Manipur police.
He said, “The police stand as the backbone of peace and progress, ensuring law and order even in the toughest times. Their dedication reflects the strength and spirit of the state.”
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening the police force through better infrastructure, advanced training, and welfare measures.
Highlighting the achievements of the force, he noted the successful operations against extremism, the destruction of illegal poppy cultivation, and the progress in modernization and welfare initiatives.
He acknowledged the heroism of those who continue to serve with integrity and compassion every day.
The Governor also congratulated Additional SP (sport) Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Naorem Roshibina Devi for bringing international laurels to the state and the Manipur police through their remarkable sporting achievements.
Earlier, Bhalla inspected the parade contingents of Manipur police and took salute of the spectacular march past parade commanded by commandant of 6th India Reserve Battalion Dr Sarangthem Ibomcha Singh.
Contingents from various units of the state police, comprising Manipur Rifles (Male Contingent), India Reserve Battalions (Male), Civil Police (Male), Civil Police (Female), 9th IR (Mahila) Battalion, Traffic Police, Home Guards, and VDF (Male) participated in the march past parade.
A skill show by the Manipur Police Sports Club was also showcased as a part of the commemoration.
The Governor also distributed trophies/awards to outstanding police stations, battalions and police personnel for their exemplary service, bravery, and dedication to duty.
This year, Kangpokpi police station of Kangpokpi district adjusted the DGP Trophy for the best police station. The second and third best police station trophies went to the city police station of Imphal West district and Bishnupur police station of Bishnupur district respectively.
The police officer trophy of the year went to inspector Gunachandra Chanam posted in Imphal West district.
Several MLAs, chief secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh and senior officers also attended the event.
